About
Williams's Boys
Being born into a musical family
has its advantages. Ted, Edd, Jeff, and Marcus are the only four children of
William and Sarah Byler. Throughout their growing up years “God and family” were
the top priorities in the Byler home. Evenings were often spent singing and
playing new songs on an old weather-worn guitar that followed them on many
camping trips and outings in the Missouri Ozarks. The brothers grew up on
back-home country living, and learned almost all of their music on their own.
Their music tastes were influenced by the local bluegrass and hillbilly styles
of the 1980’s around Branson, Missouri.
The Byler family moved to North
Idaho in 1990 to help in a church planting effort. There the boys started an
informal band (with no name) singing at church functions and local prison
ministries. On September 11, 1999 two very close friends of the boys were killed
in a tragic airplane accident, leaving behind wives and 8 children. Brothers Jon
and Danny Byler were double first cousins of the boys, and had shared many
adventures with them. At the urging of other family members Ted, Edd, Jeff, and
Marcus committed to putting some of their songs on a recording, commemorating
the lives of Jon and Danny.
It was not until the recording
was completed that the new band decided on a name. Remembering that for years
they had been just introduced with: “William’s boys will be singing this
evening,” it was only natural to continue as “William’s Boys” in honor of their
father. Jeff is the songwriter of the group. He has written several songs, five
of which appear on the El Dorado album. Jeff also plays electric guitar, violin,
mandolin, hammered dulcimer, and keyboards. Edd does most of the lead singing
and plays the acoustic guitar. He also plays harmonica and banjo. Marcus sings and plays
bass guitar in the band, while Ted sings harmony and plays a little
banjo.
So far William’s Boys have
recorded only one album, El Dorado. Songs on the album are themed on heaven and
Christian living. Other commitments have made it difficult to organize a second
album, though they hope to do another one sometime. In 2001 Jeff was ordained to
the ministry in the Kootenai Valley Mennonite Church in Bonners Ferry, Idaho,
where he serves with William, who was ordained bishop at the congregation in
2000. Jeff has spent many months in the past years involved in mission work in the
Dominican Republic. All four boys and their father work together at a
manufacturing business which they own and operate.
